From a distance cardinals may be identified by their large, conical beaks and their crest and long tail. The adult male sports brigh red plumage that is more dull on the back and wings, and black around the base of his red bill. |
The female cardinal has a reddish crest, wings, and tail with brownish-gray upperparts and buffy underparts. She has a red bill and looks much like the juvenile who has a distictive dark bill and crest. |
